Paul John Whiskey

Whenever we talk about whiskeys, the primary spirit categories include Canadian, Irish, Scotch, and Indian. However, many countries are emerging with their brands and identities within the global market, and India is no exception to this rule. This is where we discover Paul John Edited Indian single malt whiskey and Paul John bold whiskey.

Paul John Edited is a single malt whisky distilled in the southwestern Indian state of Goa. It was previously unavailable in the American market. “Edited” is the name of the specific version being reviewed here. This whiskey is bottled at 46% ABV and is derived from six-row barley. The information about this whiskey is readily available on the rear label of the bottle and the accompanying carton. This aspect makes this whiskey very easy to review.

According to the website, “Edited” is a whiskey where the experts at Paul John have “poured forth all mastery.” Along with this, the peat smoke component is “created from discreetly chosen cask profiles.” Other labels from Paul John include Brilliance, offered at a suggested retail price of $60, Bold ($75), Select Cask ($95), and Select Cask Peated ($100). Edited is available at a suggested retail price of $65 per 750 ml bottle.

Here are the tasting notes of Paul John Edited:

  • Vital stats - 46% ABV (80.56 proof according to labelling), no age statement, 100% malted barley, $65 per 750 ml bottle.
  • Appearance - The overall appearance of this whiskey can be compared to a peach tea. There are shades of light amber and honey with pale, pinkish hues and thin and quick legs.
  • Nose - There is a presence of decent heat with alcohol mingling from the alcohol mingling with peat smoke, pineapple, coriander, coffee, greenish barley notes, charred oak.
  • Palate - This whiskey has a very complex palate. There are a lot of spicy notes. This whiskey is smoky, spicy and sweet at the same time. There are hints of fennel seeds, turmeric salted butter, caramel, and toffee. The whiskey has a bright and sweet finish with subtly smoky flavours.

It is safe to say that this whiskey has upgraded the standard of Indian whiskeys in the market. There is now a concrete competition building in the arena of Indian single malts. This whiskey provides a genuinely good sipping experience on its own. The aroma and depth of flavour are balanced quite well.

Review of 100 Pipers

There is a sound piece of history which has inspired the birth of this brand. The 100 Pipers is a fine blend of around thirty whiskeys sources from in and around Scotland. This whiskey is aged in a combination of European Sherry and American ex-bourbon casks, and is regarded as one of the most renowned blends in Asia. It is also available in South America and parts of Europe.  This brand was taken over by Seagrams in 1949 which finally entered the American lands in the 60s in order to compete with the various ‘standard’ whiskeys available at that time. Although this blend isn’t premium, it still does a fair amount of justice to the ‘deluxe’ tag that it carries with itself. This golden coloured liquor is most definitely a candy to the eyes. The blend is grainy with some nice traces of cream and malt. The nose of this whiskey is vanilla and caramel with some hints of citrus and fresh malt. It is a very well constructed blend that has rightfully gained all the appreciation from the world
